Big Sky Skating and Hockey Association (BSSHA) is a Montana non-profit corporation in Big Sky, MT dedicated to bringing hockey, ice skating, and programs to the Big Sky community. The Big Sky Ice Rink is located outdoors in the Town Center.
The Big Sky Skating and Hockey Association (BSSHA) is a Montana non-profit organization whose mission is to provide programming and venues for public ice rink use in the community. Our goals are to provide a facility, equipment and programming to educate the public regarding ice skating, hockey, and sportsmanship, and to help provide quality and affordable recreational opportunities to all community members including disciplined competitive and recreational hockey for adults and children.
The BSSHA maintains and operates two rinks: a larger hockey-ready rink and a smaller, child-friendly rink that is open to the public even when events are scheduled on the larger rink. The operation of these rinks includes maintaining the supporting infrastructure, such as a warming hut, rubber matting walkways, and seating for spectators. We estimate that the rinks provided 2,000 to 2,500 skater days in the most recent season.
The board of the organization is all-volunteer, and board members spend many hours managing the association, promoting the rinks, and prepping and maintaining the rinks. Community members volunteer their time for larger projects, like setting up the boards that go around the large rink for hockey.
There has been Community support of our organization from the very beginning. First, after investing approximately $150,000 to develop the Town Center Park, the Simkins family made the park available to the BSSHA to use for their rink without charge. Lighting was provided through grants from the community, and lots of the work needed to erect and take down the seasonal rink, create and maintain the ice, and make the rink operational was from volunteers. Also, we have benefited substantially from donations and grants from businesses, foundations, our local resort tax, and individuals.
The BSSHA also helps to foster athletic skills and sportsmanship in kids. We believe that youth sports promote good physical and emotional health, leadership skills, and communication skills in young athletes.
By providing hockey and skating in Big Sky we believe we are allowing children and their families another option to obtain these skills. We also host learn-to-skate and youth hockey programs to foster skating skills and allow kids to learn the sport close to home.
In the future, we will have a full league for youth hockey, as we have seen a great demand for it in the past two seasons.
